Q and A
What’s your proudest achievement?
My two daughters with Jenny.
What’s been your biggest mistake?
Can’t possibly tell you! However, I suppose that accepting too simple a job a number of times in my career was not my best move.
What’s your wildest career dream?
Change the UK housing industry.
What keeps you going?
The desire to serve.
What keeps you awake at night?
Mosquitoes.
What is your first thought of the day?
Be an example to others, starting with my family, then later on my colleagues.
What’s your ideal day off?
A ridiculous amount of exercise (probably road cycling) and then quality family time.
Who has had the biggest impact on your career/life?
My MBA, without a doubt. People need to do this to understand it.
What would you do if you didn’t do your current job?
When I was little, I dreamt of becoming a professional musician, but I chose not to do this when I was about 18. Now, I would probably seek to do a similar job (this is what I know), and (again) in an environment where my impact on others can be greatest.
What’s your theme song (‘Simply the best’ not allowed!)?
“I feel good”
Describe your ideal home?
An extra large Applecross (spec B) detached home, built (probably) in Scotland, near a coast, with large windows and long distance views over the sea or a lake, and which I can enjoy while playing on my grand piano in the lounge. Lots of rooms for everyone, and a garden with lots of trees. Nearest neighbour on the next island.
What’s your favourite meal and wine?
French Mediterranean lunch (lots of fruit and veg, lots of taste), and, at the moment (I confess!) a red Australian Shiraz by Yellow Tail.
What has been your most embarrassing moment?
Can’t possibly tell you. But I suppose that my first public speech in this country must have been right up there with the worst.
What kind of company will Applecross be in five years time?
No. 1 brand in Scotland, effective presence in the north-east, and a totally changed company with a very different culture, where everyone will know (for themselves) that we are special (some could say, world-class), and so will dream to join, or stay with Applecross.
My motto is: “Set out to achieve your life potential, remembering that Joy comes from serving others!” A more serious one would be: “Vive le Tour de France!”
